Successful Marketing on the Internet

By Elizabeth Varian

One common factor that every web site owner/company has is desire. However, desire isn't enough to succeed online. There are three factors that must be the driving force behind an internet business plan. Those factors are innovation, focus and execution.

If one of the three is missing, success cannot be guaranteed. Without innovation, a web site blends in with the rest and offers no uniqueness. Having no focus will result in chasing after any and every get rich quick internet money scheme that comes along. And finally, without execution...there's a lot of talk, no action, no business and no profits.

Innovation

Be unique and creative with your audience. This gives you a step above your competition. Sit down and brainstorm anything and everything that comes to mind, when you think about your industry, product/service, and your target audience. Write it all down. This list comes in handy even five years down the road. Always go back to this list for ideas.

Don't be afraid to try new content, ideas for marketing, or online tools. Test them with your audience and see which ones work for your web site. Those that don't are not failures. They're simply one step closer to knowing your internet visitors.

Focus

Decide today an overall purpose and an end-result goal for having a web site. Why does your site exist? Not to simply make money. That's your purpose for starting a business in general. Why did you choose this particular product/service? What is the purpose of your web site? Is it to give enough information to your online visitors so that they use your services or products? Or are you selling camp gear to the novice hikers?

Whatever your purpose, you need to decide what it is and put it in writing. So, if you are selling camp gear, you won't jump at the amazing opportunity to sell the latest teen magazine that trend shows are selling like hot cakes.

A well-developed focus that is strictly enforced enables you to continue growing and to increase a cashflow. Also, make sure to put together a list of one-year, three-year, and five-year goals; so that each time those goals are met, you'll know you're on the right track with success.

Execution

Follow-through, follow-through, follow-through. How many people do you know that have great ideas, who are still talking about those ideas five years later? Keep all of your ideas in a folder on their own separate sheet of paper. Each sheet should first list the idea, then underneath it write out all the to do factors (materials, talents and the timeline needed) that will make this idea happen, write how this idea is related to your focus, and finally, set a realistic deadline.

Always remember the three elements of success:
Innovation - Focus - Execution
