Freshen Up for Spring

By Juliana Day

Ah, spring is here - finally! The snow is melting, the sun is shining longer and most of us feel the urge to venture outdoors again. If you are feeling like winter steamrolled you, try some of these quick fixes to help you feel refreshed and ready for spring.

  1. Get some lips
Do you want lips like Angelina Jolie? You know - the positively out there, lips on steroids? Well, you don't need collagen injections - simply apply some lip gloss. Gloss makes lips appear fuller. I like "Lip Glass" by MAC. Just apply over your favorite shade and your lips will light up the room. Don't forget the lip-liner; your gloss will make your lipstick bleed and you don't want to look like the girl working the "kissing booth" at the fair.

Tip: Dark lipstick makes lips appear smaller and thinner whereas light lipsticks make lips appear larger. If you have thin lips avoid dark lipsticks. For added oomph, put your gloss over a light shade.

  2. Get some highlights
Highlights are ageless, so never think you're too old. They are a great way to brighten up your look without doing anything too drastic. If you are not sure what would look best with your coloring, see a professional or you may end up looking like a skunk - don't laugh, it happened to me!

If you know what you like, and you're a woman on a budget, you could try a highlighting kit like "Frost and Glow". Just remember to pull very small chunks through the cap. You don't want to relive "The Bride of Frankenstein".

  3. Get out and go for a walk
"The roads are too slippery"; "The air is too cold"; "I just washed my hair." Those excuses won't work any more. A half hour walk each day can put roses back in your cheeks and give you more energy.

  4. Get a manicure
I know it costs money, but most manicures will only set you back $10-$20. Get pampered and do yourself a beauty favor in the process. It will help freshen up your look to have nicely cut cuticles, pretty rounded nails and fresh (un-chipped) polish. I recommend something clear or iridescent, so you won't have to wear red for the next week to match your polish.

Tip: The fashion gurus say the French manicure is out, but I'd still do whatever you think looks nice. The fashion gurus don't wear your nails.

  5. Get your teeth polished.
Do I sound like your mother? My mom used to take us to the local dental hygienist school for a whole morning of teeth cleaning, so don't complain about the hour it will take you.

You should have your teeth cleaned at least once a year, and it's covered by most health plans. Your mouth will feel great.

Tip: While you are there, check out the latest technologies in teeth whitening. This is an excellent way to rejuvenate a smile.

These are just a few ideas to get you back into the "spring of things". No here's my best piece of advice: just enjoy the miracle of spring. You are beautiful already because the same God that made the flowers and birds made you. The rest is just for fun.
